Design Tips For A Kitchen Remodel

The kitchen enjoys the highest volume of human traffic in just about every home. Whether that involves just preparing meals, coming and going or gathering together, a smart kitchen remodel should account for these and other considerations. Here are three things to mull over when planning a new design.

Account for Adequate Seating

If you have an eat-in kitchen or just like to enjoy morning coffee in the room, a suitable place to sit is important. Consider the size of your kitchen and window space before making any large-scale decisions. Couples and small families may opt for a window counter where you can eat, chat and enjoy the view. Another popular option is the kitchen island. Of course, you will need plenty of square footage to install one comfortably and walk around. A third option might be a breakfast nook. These have declined in popularity compared to islands. However, they are quite flexible in terms of the number of people, full-meal dining or just coffee. They tend to take advantage of comfortable seating.

Open Shelves vs Cabinets

Both schools of thought have pros and cons. Open shelves tend to make cooking and meal preparation very convenient. Things are in plain sight and easy to access. The other interesting thing about open-shelved kitchens is that colorful products become a design element. Stacked tomato cans or cereal boxes are in plain view and add color. The downside is the same, everything is in plain view. Open shelves also require more regular cleaning.

Cabinets are wonderful for a static design. You select the style that suits your individual taste and go. They never become visibly cluttered and require less maintenance than open shelves.

Consider Natural Light

One of the major faux pas of kitchen designs is focusing on the material items and back-benching natural light aspects. If you are going full-tilt with a kitchen remodel, it may be wise to invest in skylights and larger windows. Natural light can be uplifting and allows you to infuse the kitchen with vibrant plants.
